The Lens Through Which We See Ourselves

With love and understanding.

Instead of praise, we practice cutting ourselves down like trees.
And then it’s into the wood chipper we go;
Shredding ourselves to pieces.

I try to make it stop.
To say I love you and actually mean it,
But doubt and fear are always on patrol.

One day soon I will sneak in,
When the guards are fast asleep,
And I will change the lens through which I see.

So that I can view myself for what I am,
and who I am capable of becoming.

On that day I will love myself.
I will be able to see,
All the greatness and the light,
That is hidden deep inside of me.
